I put tea bags to one side to dry on a saucer. A short while later I tear open the two or three bags that have dried, letting tea leaves fall in to a small bucket I keep in the kitchen for veg peelings. Reason being, many tea bags contain plastic.
It is not tedius at all-just takes seconds. I get though loads of tea.
The more bacteria you can get in to the heap the greater the microbial activity there will be. However, avoid things that cause pathagens to develop such as meat products etc.
After adding several inches of waste material to the heap, I usually put a sprinking of soil on top. There are many millions of microbes in a handfull of soil.
Anyone interested in composting will probably also find it helpful to read a few articles on soil microbes and microbial activity.
