Greenfly

Does anyone have a good way of dealing with these pests without resorting to bug spray?
I have a lovely rose in my front garden which is gradually growing up it's trellis but the new rose buds are being attacked by these pests. Some of the buds are starting to open up but are deformed. I've been out this afternoon, picking them off at their various stages of development from little white nymph things to the juicy green stage, and squashing them,  but it's hard work! I'm sure they are breeding as soon as I turn my back. I'm going to have another go with my grandads method of soapy water, but I tried this earlier with limited success, so other than resorting to chemicals which I'd like to avoid if possible, I don't know what else to try. Does anyone have any advice to offer. Thanks.

Dont pick them. Rub them gently to squash them. Fondle the buds😉
    In London. Keen but lazy.

How many times did you spray them with soapy water?  It takes a few goes to deter / kill them.

Yes, I will have another go with the soapy water, on a more regular basis, plus fondle the buds!  ;)    :)
