Evergreen climber for North East facing Fence

I need to choose a climber to cover a new fence which faces North East.  I have dry, chalky soil which I do enhance with compost etc.   I'd like a climber that doesn't shed all its leaves in winter and, ideally, with fragranced flowers as the fence is very close to our patio doors.  I can erect trellis if needed.  I was thinking of a clematis - not sure which one - but am open to other ideas.  I definitely do not want any form of ivy! Anybody got any suggestions?
