What's this growing on my apple tree!??

  • I always thought that German wasps tend to build their nests underground ... but wasps tend not to read the books saying what they should do. 
    German wasps are one of the several types of wasp commonly found in the UK ... no better and no worse than any of the others 😊 
    Or it could be a European hornet 😂 these two are the most similar looking ones I've found on the web. This nest is hidden behind tree leaves so it seems whoever built it prefer it dark and shaded. 
  • The nest is not going to get any bigger, it has been completed. If there is only one wasp using it then that is the Queen, but eventually there will be increasing numbers of workers. Try not to disturb the nest!
    How can you tell if it's completed? All the sources I've read says the initial nest will be size of a golf ball (which is about right for now) and could grow to the size of a beach ball! Eeek. Our apple tree is only a few years old I don't even think it can support that kind of weight...

    The nests are (eventually) great for art projects.
