Cutting back Spirea

My Spirea (not sure which type but it's pink) is just waking up from winter but a lot of the foliage seems to be just on the tips of the bush (not a lot going on further down branch) can I trim it down to make it bushier and more 'leafy' or is this the wrong time? T.i.a

    Ther are spring flowering and autumn flowering spiraeas, and generally you prune after flowering. I think the pink one is autumn flowering?   And to reinvigorate a spirea completely take out to the ground some of the oldest shoots, and then trim back the reat.

    @Helix, now you mention it I think it is Autumn flowering. I will take out old dead wood out but do you have any idea how far down I should trim back? for example back to a young pair of leaves?  thank you

    Cut it back hard after flowering, you can be quite tough with them , they will come back.
    I have a spirea Bridal Wreath too which was buried under rubble for 8 months... it survived and has flowered beautifully this year.

    They transplant easily. You will probably find several new plants that have rooted from it.

    Having said that I thought it was Autumn flowering, I have just had a look and it looks like it is budding already! I did move it in the Autumn and it seems quite happy.
