Planting round cherry tree

Hi, I have a small cherry tree in the middle of my grass, the grass has been cut out round the bottom of the tree. The braches are high up so you can walk under and is in full sun. I have had a couple annuals planted but would like something permanent. I just can't decide what to plant, I think it would look better with something taller and i would like small pebbles or stones to cover the soil as bark looks messy there. Thanks for any advice

Hardy Geraniums make good ground cover and plenty will do well in semi-dry dappled shade. Alchemilla Mollis will spread around gaps. Polemonium Caeruleum can add a bit of height over the early summer months. Gives an informal look.

Best to be aware that cherries and other prunus often have roots just below the surface and disturbance can cause suckering ... so only plant small plants and let them grow to fill the space, rather than plant bigger plants that need larger planting holes.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Brilliant thanks
  • What colour do you think will look best

When you say what colour, do you mean plants or pebbles/stones? I think pastel colours go well with the tree, but that is my opinion.
