Established garden with a new owner who has little knowledge, looking for advice and tips to care it

  • All a bit too ornamental for my liking. I'd pop a strawberry patch or vegetable plot in there somewhere. Probabbly where that ugly brown bush is at the moment.

The previous owner has at least left you a fairly easy to maintain garden, nothing that will get out of control too quickly. Like all elderly people they have neglected using hedge cutters and trimming branches, apart from that digging up the flower beds with gardening forks will help pull out weeds and loosen the soil for improved flowers.

Maybe think about getting a rose for next year, that's all your garden is missing mainly at the moment imo.
Funny you should say that, I have a rose bush or 2 out the front. Was going to post them up later once they were in flower as it’s only the pink climber that has flowered / is flowering well so far. Will be looking for tips for them but more in disease preventing and removal. Plus maybe some species ID along the way. Then moving onto pruning techniques and cutting back tips to have healthy bushes for years to come.

I can post now if you wish, took some photos this evening I just did not want to dump the full garden online at once and overwhelm you guys with plants and myself with information. It’s a large garden so it’s a lot to get my hands into and my head around all the techniques and tool required. Been out and got the basics so far. Sure many more will come.

@mrtjforman where did you get the idea that elderly people neglect using hedge cutters and trimming branches? So untrue. My OH is in his late 70s is very handy with his secateurs and chain saw. Just recently he was up a ladder with a long handled chainsaw cutting branches off a car port roof. My over 80 year old friend (female) opens her garden to the public every year for charity. There are people who like gardening and those who don't, doesn't matter about age.

Is the first one a kniphofia - red hot poker-ish?

  • Thank you, I’m doing the leg work behind the scenes to learn what I can about each plant and what care the require. Will be making some changes in the garden but not sure when or exactly what yet. But I’ll keep asking the questions when they pop up. Thank for everyone’s input.
