I would like to grow an Escallonia hedge and wonder what sort of gap is required between plants also is anyone prepared to recommend a reliable source?
Burncoose nurseries stock a variety of Escallonias, as they get used for hedging a lot in Cornwall. There is a care guide on their site, and video on how to prune. They have won a lot of RHS gold medals, so you can be sure of their stock.
