Are dahlias really worth the effort?

  • Love Dahlias, I’m on free-draining soil so I can leave the tubas in overwinter.

  • Sandygarden...I don’t know what sort of over wintering you do..but I just cut mine right back once the leaves have turned brown like lilies....the whole waiting for it to die back is the most annoying part I find, as they look a complete mess in the Autumn.. Also mine are all in pots btw...I have lost some (not all) Over the years, but then I get the dreaded vine weevil every so often so I put it down to that..

Dalhias in big pots have become the highlight (signature plant?) of my small garden from July onwards. Using pots save the emerging shoots from most of the slug damage in my garden. (I have to put anything mollusc-delectable in high pots).

  • @katerich48 to overwinter I dug them up and potted them into dry multipurpose compost leaving them in the cold greenhouse. The pots are then filled with Wilco’s finest cheapo tulips. I agree that the dahlias look awful when dying back though. Loving the dahlia pics everyone.
