Barrel pond, possible problem?

Hi,
I have had a barrel pond for a number of years. I had to empty it  a few years ago to keep a toddler safe. Over the past year I've let it fill up again with rain water and plan to restock it with plants. I've noticed recently it's developed a furry looking growth under the water. Is this something to be concerned about or can I ignore it and proceed to buy my plants? Any advice would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Just a build up of algae, nothing sinister.  Treatments are available to stop algae growth if there are only plants in the pond.

I made a barrel pond over the bank holiday, and bought some barley straw in little net bags to put in it, its supposed to help.

Just be aware of the barley straw pricing scams. It's £4 or less a bale direct from the farm but pond shops and garden centres sell it at a ridiculous markup.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
