Blackfly Infestation?

I have noticed next door’s bush is full of tiny black insects and most of my pot are full of them too.

Are they blackflies? I have never seen anything like this before.

Anything I can do or should I call professional help?

Please see attached pictures.

Thanks a lot.

Where have you positioned your pot? If it's slightly underneath your neighbour's shrubs, it's nothing to worry about. You can just brush or wash them off using a hose on jet setting. They look like Aphids to me. At this time of year, plenty of trees/shrubs and herbaceous plants get similar attacks.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

The pots are under my neighbour’s shrub yes. Some of the branches are really full of these black insects. Does it last all summer or will it go on its own in some point?

I guess I can trim the area over my garden.

  • They do look like aphids to me too.
I got some ladybird larvae (live larvae sent by post) and put them on a black sambucus that was literally smothered in aphids, to the point you couldn't see it's stems at all.
I thought "no way will this work", yet a week later, not an aphid in sight.
Then the larvae pupate on or near the food source and new ladybirds are born, so the cycle carries on. Every year after that, I had ladybirds and the aphids died back fast.

    Hi Jess

That sounds like a good idea to try.

I have ise the hose to clear the area and see next door’s infestation how it goes.

Thanks a lot for your ideas.
