Garden Newbie - help with overgrown wisteria!

I have recently moved house and have overgrown wisteria at the bottom of my garden, now that it has flowered I can see that it is tangled into another tree ( going over the top and to the other side) as well as keeping an old pergola standing! I am a complete newbie to gardening and I don't know where to start.....I would like to keep the wisteria and eventually train it over a new pergola and keep the tree too. Any advice on.....where/ when to start? If I take it right back will it grow again?! How to get it out of the existing tree?!

Hi Jessica. I was quite brutal with mine when I moved in as it was through the guttering and well on its way to the roof tiles. Yours looks quite mature so I would cut it out from where you dont want it and leave enough growth to retrain where you do. It would be better to take it down in stages letting it recover rather than taking it right back. Let's know how you get on!
  • Thanks Achtung! Taking it down in stages certainly seems less daunting!
