My magnolia grandiflora has, over the past two months, started to lose its leaves very rapidly. They have dark brown stains, yellow and pale green in colour.  It was planted in a pot last year with aged horse manure and a top quality compost. Does anyone know what is wrong with it?

    Perhaps overwatering?  Has the soil compacted at the base of the pot creating a solid claggy layer?  Try to feel down to the base of the soil to see what it’s like.

    Thank you for your very rapid response! I’ll check, but when I watered it a few days ago, it felt quite dry. Maybe I should drill some more holes around the base?

    If the soil has compacted and not enough drainage holes it can look dry at the top but be a soggy mess at the bottom of the pot...  how many drainage holes are there?
