Lawn disease or compacted soil?

Hi

I hope someone can help, all opinions welcome.

I sowed a new lawn last summer, it germinated well, but after a few months the growth was uneven.

Until a few weeks ago it was about the same but over the last few weeks the difference has become more pronounced.

I must admit I didn't use the best quality topsoil to level the seed bed (non-sterile, reclaimed from building sites). I also, rather foolishly in hindsight, flattened the topsoil will with a 2-3 passes of a whacker plate to achieve that perfectly level surface. Having said that, I don't believe I have a drainage problem as my lawn doesn't get waterlogged and also benefits from an elevated position.

I have also fertilised twice now, but in a measured way.

Currently I'm testing a patch in the problem area with iron sulphate to see if it's causing the problem and another patch with a high nitrogen liquid fertiliser with iron to see if it's a lack of nitrogen.

Interestingly my lawn, both good and bad areas, is infested with these tiny white insects and I mean tiny- you have to get 2 inches away from the ground to see them and only then cos they move quickly. They're white, not black, so not the cinch bug.

In the slow growing areas there has also been more dieback which is causing a thin layer of thatch that comes up with a rake.

Any advice welcome.

I’m no expert but I’d try spiking with garden folk get some air to the roots them a lawn fert (water in if synthetic to avoid burn ) to bring on new lush growth and also green up the patchy parts to match
also nice sharp lawn mower blade
    :)
