Cherry Tree proving very tasty for unidentified pest :(

We planted this cherry tree last Summer and it’s been doing very well (unlike the curly peach and nectarine trees, but that’s another thread). Anyway, just noticed that not only do we have cherries forming already - yay - but the leaves are being stripped bare by some little critter - boo hiss.

Could anyone help me identify what’s doing this - caterpillar? Moth? Other? And advise on what the best course of action to take before the whole thing is just a few stalks?!

Many thanks!

Thanks @pansyface, had thought the birds would be after the cherries and not the leaves but that makes sense.

I’m not keen to net them off as we had a rather traumatic experience last year with a blackbird who got tangled in some netting, so maybe I’ll just try some dangly shiny bird deterrent things and see if they keep them at bay (doubtful but ever the optimist!).

I took another look at the leaves and around the tree and can’t see any bird poo, plus some of the remaining leaves seem to have been eaten from the inside out, so am now back to square one.

Could it perhaps be moths? There’s no sign of any pests / insects on the tree.
