Please help! I have 2 standard Bay trees one of which is beautiful and healthy but this one is really sad and I really don’t know if it’s dying or already dead - thank you

If those leaves have gone crispy, then they will not recover. Once it gets a little warmer, prune them all off. It's a case of wait and see how they do afterwards. Is it grown in a container? Make sure they are watered well. When leaves turn like that, they are either damaged by drying winds or lack or water. Keep them sheltered by standing in a south or west wall. They should be grown in a loam-based soil too.

I'm going to say that's already dead, is it more exposed than the other one? I lost one in Aberdeen to frost and they are not hardy at all where I am now so if you are northern that could be the issue, otherwise it looks like it has dried out, if it is that close to the house it may not be getting enough water as the wall will shelter it.

  • Thank you - the other tree is a little more sheltered about 3 metres away facing East and we’re in the north of England it’s in the correct soil type and in a large pot but we’re going to try moving it and pruning it and give it a good water - thanks for your help
