Cherry Blossom trees looking poorly

i have only just noticed how poorly my cherry trees look. I have a (short) avenue with conditions on the left and the right being different. It’s dryer and sunnier on the right, wetter on the left. The dryer side look better, though I think they are all peaky.
It seems I got hardly any blossom at all, the buds are lying on the floor. They are now in leaf, but they don’t look nearly as leafy as usual.
We had a very dry winter, had the dry hot spring weather, then cold and frosts, and since then a bit of rain.
any thoughts on what has happened? If the blossom died off due to a late frost that’s ok, but what about the leaf?
They are tai haku btw. I can get pics tomorrow.

I don’t usually water anything once established so that might well help.
