From experience of growing 10+ variations of Cosmos every year, they don’t like cold overly wet soil, they are prone to fungal infections due to this, I had a nightmare last year with it because it was so cold and rainy last April during their growing period, they also prefer sandy soil/good drainage. All the Cosmos I have right now are still in the greenhouse, it’s too cold at night for them to be in the ground right now, I know night temps here are going to 3 or 4 degrees, im still using a heater at night in my greenhouse because of it! doesn’t help that when we do get sun it’s super hot during the day then the complete opposite at night, the joys of growing eh!
Your seedlings definitely look like Cosmos to me, Jr.
This discussion has got me thinking... I’ve planted some Cosmos ‘Purity’ seeds from a well-known supplier (SR), but the seedlings don’t look like typical cosmos. In fact, they look more like poppy. The seeds don’t look like typical cosmos seeds either, as they’re spherical. Am I growing something else?
definitely not Cosmos, do you remember what the seeds looked like? size etc, poppy seeds are usually like dust, near on impossible to handle one seed at a time
Inspired by yet another thread I went looking for the seed packet to see if there’s a code on the inner envelope. There is one! Apparently I’m growing Argemone platyceras. I can see how the mix up was possible. Both seed packets feature large single white flowers with yellow centres, but still rather disappointing coming from SR.
Very strange about the mix up! what you’re growing looks healthy though, I guess you’ll get some type of lovely white flowers, albeit not what you expected! Can I ask, do you grow in just coco coir? looks like coir but I could be wrong! ive been wondering about growing in coir but I know it has no nutrients
I use regular compost, but it’s on the dry side in the picture and looks like coco coir. I don’t have any experience in growing things in coco coir. Sorry I couldn’t be of any help.
