Photinia looks sad

Hi All

Can anyone help reinvigorate our photinia?  It's been like this for a few years and just looks a bit sad!

Thanks

    Dying, dying, dead. :(
  • We think that every year but the leaves grow back!

Sorry to be so negative, but at the moment it should be full of new leaves and in full bloom!

I have to say it looks like it's on the way out to me, sadly. Have you tried cutting through one of the branches to see if the wood is green or brown?
  • Will take a look.  Do you know if the roots are particularly deep, i.e. easy to get out?

I uprooted similar dying/dead specimens some years ago. If I remember correctly they were not too difficult to get at the roots. I would recommend planting a different plant, not the same species, just in case there are traces of disease in the soil.
  • Thank you

Looks like phytophthora to me....a fungal disease. And I think it could be curtains for your photinia.    Make sure that you improve the drainage before you plant anything else, and maybe stick to the resistant ones on this list.
