Climbers for shade.

KT53KT53 Posts: 9,016
I'm currently planting up a border which gets some sun, but the fence is North facing and consequently anything close to it gets no sun whatever.  I need to find something which will grow and cover the fence panels without casting even more shadow onto the border.  Initial thoughts are climbers trained along straining wires.
I need to cover 2 panels, both 4 feet high and 6 feet wide.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  The ground does retain moisture OK without being waterlogged.

    Hydrangea petiolaris?
Definitely a possible.  Anything a bit faster growing but not too thugish?  Possibly a tall order.

Most of the Clematis alpina varieties are happy on a northfacing fence. Mine are covered with flowers at the moment 😊

I've got solanum crispin glasnevin in a shady side return and it's flowering profusely and seems happy. Semi evergreen and quick growing.

Is there such a thing as a hardy white solanum?

Solanum laxum 'Album' should have added it's toxic to cats, dogs and horses.

@Dee73 I understood that Solanum laxum 'Album' is not very hardy.

Defiinitely clematis. There are loads which will be happy in a shady aspect. The alpinas that Dove mentions, are great for flowers just now, and many of the later flowering varieties will be fine too, as they often get bleached by too much sun on the flowers. You could have one of each for a succession.

That white Solanum isn't fully hardy.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Thanks for the suggestions.  Off to Malvern Show tomorrow so may pick some brains there too.
