Folks, I hate to admit defeat but think you're all right - it is a sycamore.
So, next question then ... Does anyone have any suggestions for what would grow nicely around that door frame? Novice-to-average gardener here, so nothing too clever. I can grow from a pot, or potentially install a planter box.
I was going to plant a passion fruit vine, but it doesn't seem like it will grow far enough.
Any chance of lifting a few flagstones on either side of those big doors ... you want quite a big plant ... preferably one each side to grow up and over ... and big plants have big roots and need a lot of water ... gallons every day in the summer ... I can’t think of anything big enough that will be happy in a container for very long ... but if you can plant into the ground you could have wonderful roses growing up and over framing the doorway with blooms all summer ... https://www.davidaustinroses.co.uk/etoile-de-hollande
