The oak tree at the back of our house was in leaf very early this year, the earliest certainly in recent years. I quoted the old rhyme at OH at the time. He commented that it was probably more accurate than the BBC forecast. Their idea of a gentle breeze is more like a howling gale to me.
Seems to be the case everywhere - I was a bit worried in case it was an indication of 'die back'.
In addition to 'Wild Edges' reported maxim (which seems to exist nationwide with several minor variations) years ago I was quoted: "A cold wet and windy May the barns do fill with corn and hay" - which also hints that it will be a dry summer and fulsome harvest. Sounds good to me.
Came across a small drove of hares playing silly buggers in our woodland yesterday. Very chuffed because they had become quite rare in this part of Essex.
Our ash tree has a few green sprigs appearing ... 48 hours rain and today’s sunshine seems to have woken it up ... but there are also quite a few dead branches ... small ones ... a bit concerning ...
