How to transform this space...?

I’ve got this area in my garden which is very compacted soil covered with landscape cloth and gravel. There’s probably room for 10-15cm depth of soil to be added in there. I’m looking for ideas of how to transform this area without having to break up the compacted soil underneath. I’m thinking sempervivums and sedums...is there anything with a bit of height that would be happy here?

  • I have this area at the edge of my patio. This is really compacted and I've planted with a tiny bit of compost underneath each plant and then just covered in gravel.
I bought small plants but they have done a good job of getting their roots down with no help from me.

And the other side ferns and hostas

No pain no gain. Great work out digging up and improving this area. You will then be able to grow some lovely plants with spring bulbs.

Were you thinking of taking up the gravel and the fabric first?
