High privacy screening

Hi , our neighbours are on a much higher level than us , and their 8 foot wall , unfinished on our side but is part of their own property .the wall is only 4 feet high on their side . At the moment we have a 10 feet high Lawsons Cyprus hedge which covers the ugly wall and extends slightly over the height of the wall to provide privacy . My problem is hedge is starting to die and will probably have to come down . My question is : what can I do to replace this and have the privacy kept . I am stumped as to what to do ? Do not really want to put up a large fence ( more fencing to paint !.any suggestions would be very welcome . Kind regards , doug

I hope it is a well built double skinned wall with buttresses and good foundations if it's that high. We had the same problem with a breeze block wall our side, but didn't want to have it rendered because of the expense and maintenance so screwed some trellis panels in front of the wall and then grew shrubs in front of that. There are shrubs that will grow to 8-10 ft but you need some that won't need much pruning. What about some roses?

  • Thanks for reply , unfortunately we cannot render the wall as the whole wall on both sides is built on our neighbors land , the original dividing 3 feet fence is completely in our land , so legally he still actually owns half of this fence even although he has an 8 foot wall .

A clump forming bamboo perhaps like fargesia nitida?  (Not a runner!)
