DROWNING THE PLANTS

Well this time last week i was in shorts and enjoying the weather here in france,
It was in the 80s going on the 90's and we did think about taking the pool cover off,

Today even the dogs didnt seem keen on the walkies and after spending time in the greenhouse i got soaked walking back to the house,
So what's the best thing for a keen gardener to do ? "YES" you've got it go to the village and help with the bags of shopping,
I found myself inside the local supper-market looking at the geraniums for sale !!!!
Again with age comes experience and to look at these plants pre- picking the pot up to see if any roots managed to survive the drowning of the hose pipe it had just had,
the leaves we're mostly yellowing, the compost soaking and the few flowering heads didnt look good.
Why is it who ever is given the task of looking after so many plants in these places has'nt a clue what they are doing and waiting for the plants to sell?

Roll on sunday "the forcast is a better day weather wise" and all next week is looking good 80 plus all week.

dannyandshaz, You either find plant far to wet or bone dry, makes you wonder why they bother to try and sell plants if they are not going to care for them properly. I suppose super market employees don't have the training needed.
  • I agree they dont seem to do they,
But again its a changing world and the people who work for such places seem the least people you'd want to be near the pulic,
Dont get me wrong some people who do work in these places are really nice and make you feel welcome "But" for me the likes of LidI store are so cold un friendly "no loo's"
and the speed of the cashiers belt system is again not a friendly place tobe
A little background music may be a good idea ,

Interesting thought ... the continual confusion in the UK with geraniums and pelargoniums.

My French vocabulary never got as far as plant names ... have the French been more sensible and avoided any such confusion?

Are Latin names used more commonly en francais or does confusion reign supreme with some plants and if so which ones?

god protect us from " background music" in shops. Fine if it's music you like: drives me straight out the door if I don't like it.
Mercifully Waitrose have a policy of NO music.

Agree @Hostafan1 The reason I often do shop in Lidl, no music.

dannyandshaz As you say a changing world. I'm lucky our local Aldi are very friendly and always help me but I'm of the age where people think poor old dear and help not that I mind but if I can manage myself I like to. I find DIY stores the worst, I waited around three quarters of an hour for some to help me and gave up in the end and tried to put a 120 ltr of compost and a 8 ft scaffolding board in my car when a member of the public kindly helped me.

I agree on the music but not loud and pop music all the time. I was in Morrison the other day and couldn't stand the music so took my hearing aid out lol.

With so many Loo's being closed you would think shops would have public loo's available.

I'm off to make what I like to call my lazy apple tart, put the apple, blackberries, almonds, demerara sugar and a few nobs of butter onto pastry pull the sides up a bit and cook.

The bus station I use plays music apparently it stops young people hanging around causing bother? I find it extremely irritating!

Not long ago i returned to the uk to have my car serviced, I arranged to stay in severn oaks for three days while the car was serviced and i found myself walking around all kinds of shops and So called garden centre's to kill time,
I was in one of those home base stores and could help hear an old lady asking the young shop assistant (aged about 18 girl) if she had any of those wooden rails that go around the wall "err i think you call it a dill doll rail"
The young girl slipped down behind her counter and i could hear her choking with laughter.

Well lifes better if you can laugh rather than cry "would'nt you agree"?

Hi debs, I agree ref the wrong sort of music but in my mind any music is better than those annoying tannoys systems telling you that the easter eggs are all reduced etc etc,

We do have a lot of street markets here, "each village has one and infact you could go to one every day of the week if you wanted to, Its so nice hearing some of the older ladies singing along to some of the french music, its not like rock and roll but every now & then i have heard phil collins songs,
As ive said LidI i find like some kind of death hall ie cold with little to make you want to return, LidI Is winning the price war just now "hence" people are buying from them but the staff are over worked, if they're not filling shelves they're rushing over to take your cash on the tills.
But at least these people are working and thats saying something these days.
Nice to share our thoughts with you debs.

No background music for me please. Noise pollution is everywhere, we don’t need it in the shops. And I can’t even imagine how horrible it must be for people who work there, to endure it for 7-8 hours a day.
Love our local Lidl, shop assistants are friendly and polite, yet efficient enough not to spend twenty minutes chatting with one customer while ten others are waiting in line.
And as to toilets - I didn’t even know they don’t have any at their shops. Always wait until I get home 😄
