Japanese Acer
Hi. First time here and desperately seeking some sagely advice.
I have a purple/red leaved Japanese Acer, it has the large non lacy type leaves.
We have had it for 20 years and it has always been super healthy, with some very minor pruning to help keep its shape, the canopy is 4 to 5 ft across and it sits in a large 3ft x 3ft pot. It has good shelter from the wind, gets sun for about 3 or 4 hours a day and has been happy where it is for probably nearly 10 yrs.
This year, buds and leaves have formed but the leaves have not opened, they have died off, simultaneously the tree seemed to stop taking water. About 4 days or so after our last rain I noticed the water was sitting an inch above the soil. I drilled a hole in the side at the bottom of the pot and probably 10 litres of water gushed out.
My only thought is that it’s pot bound and might be saved by moving it. Can I do this now given that it’s not an ideal time to disturb things and will it survive a rotation of the seasons with no leaves?
Please note I can eliminate wind, obviously water, and sun so there aren’t any of the normal Acer problems, this is one of about a dozen I have and never seen this before.
Help greatly appreciated, this was the first plant my wife and I ever bought and has a great deal of sentimental value.
