Lots of clematis are happier in shade @jaffacakes. If the growing info states that, then it's a fair bet it's true!  :)

Too pale and peely wally for me.

Common term up here @Obelixx. Wally is pronounce 'wah' as in wabbit, not 'woh' as in wall    :D
Pale and uninteresting, washed out - that sort of thing  :)

Very apt.  That's why I prefer Blue Angel - tepals don't have that frill and it has the interesting dark purple stripey bar on the reverse side.  I brought mine with me from Belgium and he's been in the ground a couple of months now so still settling in.   Should take off next year.

I know that I'm in the minority when it comes to pastel colours generally, but that's fine. I think strong colours work a bit better in our climate up here too.

I don't mind being different - I don't like roses or the colour blue either!  :D

I think I have enough pastels and roses for the two of us @Fairygirl......you can have my share of scarlet instead 😉

I was thinking a pastel colour might light up some of the shadier areas in this garden 🤔

All this Clematis talk, has me wandering around the garden wondering where I might be able to put a few extras in.

Excellent @punkdoc!   Can't have too many clematis.

@Chicky - can't do scarlet but can do those bright orange rudbeckia??   I like geum Mrs Bradshaw but not dayglo orange California poppies.  I dare say I'll get there tho.

That's grand @chicky, although I like strong , dark reds rather than scarlets. Fussy mare :D
