Thinking of buying a new lawn mower?
Hi all you earth lovers,
I'd like to introduce myself and i hope offer a little thought to those who are thinking of buying a lawn mower (more a ride-on than a walk behind one )
I now live in france having moved when i got to retirement age, We did live in wales "BALA" area but because we fell in love with gardening years pre retirement the chance to have a much larger garden came due to the prices of property with land here in france and the longer summer weather, So here we came.
I was asked only this last week by an english couple what i thought was the best ride on and why!!! This isn't the first time ive been asked this question so i thought i'd offer some advice.
Well the first thing to think about is not the price, I say this because you can buy cheap and end up with a future of problems ref spare parts for shall we say the makes not to well known and you'll find lots of makes out in the gardening world,
Again when it comes to wear of parts such as the Belt's you'll need to ask yourself if your willing and wanting to change a broken belt yourself or have someone call and collect the mower and change the damaged part for a new one (And these belts always seem to break over a weekend or bank holiday time and half way through a cut)
So again in my opinion a belt mounted on the upper side of the lawn mowers skirt (platform)
"so you can see the belt without having to lay on the floor while the machine is held off the ground to enable you to even see the verious wheels that the belt is to go around to enable the cutting blades to work. It really is important to get the correct spare parts that are made for your machine, "Plenty of cheap rubbish parts can be bought and you'll find if you use these cheap parts you'll buy twice as they are just not made with the correct materials and dont last.
Its also important to clean the underside of the mower after use, "if not" your grass cuttings will set like concrete and effect the cutting of the lawn,
my own mower has a connection on the skirt that you plug a hose pipe onto it, This is tobe used after you've finished your cutting of the grass and with the motor off, after you've used the hose pipe connection device then turn the water off and the engine on and select the cutting mode and this will cause the water on the blades etc tobe sent spinning off "NOTE" never use any kind of pressure water device on your mower as this can cause serious problems to the engine and all turning parts due to the extreme pressure these devices use.
Well I hope this has given thought as to what to buy and why, my own mower is a John Deer
and this brand is a very popular make and parts and service if needed are easy to find,
Good gardening to you all.
