@Mr. Vine Eye exactly the same thing happened to me this season!
My neighbour has a lot of all kind of weeds and plants in his "garden", and I regularly get seedlings of aquilegia which I duly remove. This year I decided to give them a chance and kept a few of them, which have nicely flowered.
Then, an aquilegia peeked between the fence boards from the neighbour's.
Guess I'll have to amend my previous post in this discussion from "Any plant that I did not plant is a weed and gets removed." to "Most plants that I did not plant are considered weeds and get removed, except for aquilegias."
