Can I plant a lemon cypress into the ground and control the size easily?

Good morning :)

Please be kind enough to advise me on the following:

The house we moved into has a lemon cypress potted up at the front of the house.

We moved its position recently (by half a metre), and we had to cut off some roots that had grown out of the base of the pot. We are not sure whether these were the roots of the cypress tree itself (which is 1.5m or so) or those of another plant that was growing in the pot (which was removed).

If they were the roots of the cypress, then I am worried I will now need to water it regularly, as the canopy so to speak doesn't allow water into the pot when it rains.  I have not watered it for nearly a  year and it seems fine, which makes me think they were the roots of the cypress :(

What I wanted to ask, was, is it ok to plant the cypress in to the soil so near the house? I looked it up and they can grow tall, but I have seen the same plant in front of other houses and they seem to remain the same size, probably because they are being pruned regularly?

I just have shrubs at the front which do not need attending to (other than a light prune at the appropriate time), and I would not like to have anything that is not self maintaining so to speak.

I thought I would ask incase there is something I am unaware of,

Thank you!

If it is in a pot it needs you to water it regularly. The root was searching for water. It will do better planted in the ground but if you want to control the size you will need to keep it clipped. Lemon cypress is used as a hedging plant so can take being clipped but like most conifers will grow tall given half a chance - 15 metres high.

If you aren't going to keep it clipped, and it sounds like you aren't, then it needs a new home. It is just not the right plant for your situation.

    Thank you for your reply

I'm happy to clip it occasionally, but was worried about roots, being near the house?
I don't know whether this is the type of tree whose roots might cause issues?
