This magnolia was very healthy until 10 years ago when it was hit by a late frost. Since then it has only gradually returned to producing normal sized leaves. After 2-3 years it resumed flowering. It lost a few branches - some smaller ones simply dying and falling off. As you can see in the spring it’s leaves are yellowish and small. Really struggles to get going after flowering. It’s not dry or unusually wet. No nearby groundworks. I’ve tried adding loads of compost etc., and previously extra nutrients, no obvious « cure ». Growing on clay + thinning topsoil. Probably 40 years old. Anybody who can help me understand what’s wrong and suggest remedial action? Thanks very much!

The tree may even have a fair few dying branches and tips. Look at all the branches carefully to see any areas that have no leaves, particularly near the ends. They will need pruning back to good wood. This will help to rejuvenate the tree. Do this in the summer or autumn months only. Since it is quite a mature tree, I recommend you do 1/3 of them this year and then next year repeat again.
