Acer Sangokaku disease, black trunk

My acer palmiatum Snagokaku seams to be sick. Does anyone know what it is? Trunk and branches become dark and dry. Can I help somehow?

I noticed that some leaves were not as big as others, the leaves then died during the summer but didn't fall.
The following year I noticed black bruises on some branches and those branches didn't come into leaf.
There's some info here from the RHS.
VW is one possibility there may be other causes.
