sarcococca confusa C5

I have 7 of these plant in a raised bed next to a fence, east facing. most of them are in a sorry state with few leaves and some yellowing, but one is fine. last year they did develop some berries.
What might be the problem with the lack of bushy healthy growth?

How long since they were planted?

How much water did they get last year?

  • it was very hot here last year so I had the sprinkler on sometimes I never watered them from a watering can or hose so maybe not too much...
  • Sorry MPC ? what do you recommend to improve soil, feed/mulch ?

  • thank you all for your help with this, I will give them a feed and water well and see if they pick up in the next few months. I really appreciate all the feedback

A couple of ours tend to do the drop leaves and go yellow thing, just like yours.
Partly because I grow some in pots and they get forgotten, and one who grows in quite deep shade and very dry near the house wall.

I cut them back feed and water them and they romp away with new stems, don't be afraid to cut them back and you will get nice fresh stems from the base which will bear loads of flowers in the winter/spring.

As Philippa said they do like a little shade, my worst affected ones have been sat in a sunnier spot with lack of water and not potted on.
