What kind of ground cover?

I would like to put some gravel/slates/pebbles or other ground cover in the area that has been dug out (in the picture). Originally I wanted bark but we do get few cats in the area so I gave up on that idea and I am now thinking something stone based. I would love to hear some ideas what might be the best option for us - we have small-ish kids so possibly small gravel isn't best as that would be spread all over the grass; the planters are (will be) used for vegetables so need to walk on it too so not purely decorative.
Many thanks for advice!

I have a patch in my front which hasn't been planted up, and it had bark there.  Whenever I entered my house, I would always get a whiff of something nasty, and could never figure it out (not knowing anything about cats).  After doing some 'gardening' there and removing the bark to rearrange a few plants, the smell went, and I concluded it must have been cat urine - they urinated on the bark chips, and the bark soaked it up and it stank :(

So unless you get some cat deterrent, I would think about the bark carefully! This is just my experience.  Its just soil there at the moment (while I try to figure out how to lay low maintenance ground cover) but I will definitely be planting the area up.

I have read somewhere that cats use gravel as well as their toilet!

My choice would be slate. Plenty of onlibe suppliers who will deliver bulk bags or bagged but it loojs quite a large area so could you turf some?
