Peiris forest flame

My peiris is 20+ years old it’s always been very bushy and healthy looking. This year is started to look very bare at the bottom, it grew all new leaves in March and did the usual turning red then, the new leaves went all brown an shrivelled (as you can see on the photo). I’m not sure what it is, what’s caused it and what to do. Can anyone shed any light on it please. Thank you.

Hi Potty. The yellowing leaves could be a sign of nutrient deficiency. Do you ever give it a feed?
I use an ericacious one for mine, the type for azaleas/rhododendrons etc.

The shriveled brown bits seem a bit sun scorched to me. Is it in quite a sunny position?

I’ll try that, feeding them. I wondered if it could also be frost damage. Round the base of the bush has no leaves it’s just all twiggy. I’ll get some food see if it helps. Thank you

Check your leaves, particularly the undersides. Do you see insects or evidence of insect excrement there? Your shrub looks like it's suffering from an infestation of Pieris Lacebugs. I recommend you prune all the damaged leaves including the mottled ones back, that should minimise it spreading.

Frost damage is always possible if you grow your shrub in strong sunlight, but the overall shrub's more maturer leaves needs checking too. If not dealt with in the long-run, your shrub will grow weaker.
