Laurel help???? Please :-)

Hello ! Sorry to be a pain!! Me  and my partner recently bought our first house which was very open at the front. We decided to plant some laurel to create a hedge. We bought some laurel rootballs at a very reasonable price which I planted myself about 2 months ago. I looked online for any advice prior to planting the rootballs and feel I followed the advice I had seen. After  2-3 weeks  I noticed some worrying signs. Some of the leaves started going yellow and falling off. After looking online further it wud seem I had probably been watering them to much (every other day).  The leaves seem fine at the top it’s mainly towards the bottom of the plants  where the leaves have gone yellow and a lot have fallen off. I will include some pics. There seem to be a lot of yellow bare stems at the bottom and I’m wondering if I prune these it will encourage some growth at the bottom??  Hopefully I’m worrying over nothing but wud be gutted if they end up dying after all the hard work put in planting them ! Sorry for the long message any help wud be much be appreciated :-) thank you

First thing to do - don't panic! Lay off the watering for a week or so (unless it's extremely hot and dry). You could try cutting a foot off the height right along the hedge (unless you've already done this when you planted them). This would help them to thicken out at the bottom and grow more leaves. It is quite normal for evergreen shrubs to shed their old leaves, which go yellow as they age, at this time of year. If you want more advice, read back through some of the numerous threads on laurels on this forum (just type in laurels in the search box).  Hope this helps, I expect the other posters will soon offer more advice.

  • Morning Lizzie thank you very much for the reply much appreciated!!  I have seen other people mention about trimming the laurels down. Which I have not done yet. I will have a little bit of a read up on that then as it wud be scary trimming them down!! Wud want to make sure I’m trimming them in the right place ! I am not watering them as much as I did. I will try not to worry to much. I guess it was the initial shock as the hedge looked really green and full when first planted  Also Wud be a tad embarrassing the hedge dying after all of the local dog walkers and neighbours taking a keen interest in what I was doing as I was planting them. I had  Never spoken to as many of them before :-) thanks again!!
