    I think the smell develops  because it is encased in plastic.

    I've had lots of the grow sure farmyard manure and stable manure and never found them to stink too bad .I'd just open them and let the air get into it you can also water the dung and cover it in plastic which will speed up the composting process if it's really fresh stuff

    Last week I was in a GC as it opened and everyone was gagging with that stuff. Staff had been asked to bring it in, but the manager was directing them to take it outside again. I love the smell of good healthy manure but this stuff was horrible so there must be a problem with the batch. Can you get them to collect it and refund you?

    I think it probably was a problem batch. You could smell the urea/burnt plastic five houses down. I have now decanted it into a compost bin, so can't return it. In my experience that plastic smell doesn't go for months and months, but hopefully with woodchip and rain it will wash through. It might be ok to use for autumn. Normal horse or cow manure is a great smell. Sick plastic chicken is a whole other ballgame.
