I let it flower and then chop it back so I never see the berries. The white flowers are quite pretty though. I've never noticed them on the overgrown one next door - I suppose I'd have noticed if they were red😉 When I dig mine out, they're attached to runners under the ground . I'm sure that they'll be fine if you keep an eye on them. Mine are pretty old and were allowed to get out of hand.
I wonder if you're both talking about Cornus Alba 'Sibirica'? It's red with plain green leaves.
You're probably right Rubytoo, maybe it depends upon the conditions the plant is in (soil, light, water, etc). I hadn't considered it, but perhaps they can grow from the dropped berries and it's not necessarily a root problem. Do birds normally eat the berries of the cornus?
I've planted the forcythia this morning as no one's mentioned a potential problem with that one. The two cornuses I'm eyeing suspiciously. I've put them in larger pots for the moment until I can figure out a 'safe' place to put them.
