Root on surface

Discovered a longish Clematis plant root loose on top of the soil on a sloping area. Not sure how best to try and help it - reading that mulch may be a solution? It's a very old plant and I suspect the soil has eroded. Any ideas?

Probably cover the roots more deeply. They certainly like their roots to be deep.  Do you have any viable roots you could take cuttings from. ?
