Decking Stain

I can't believe that with all the decking that's in our gardens these days that no-one  has come up with a good stain/protection for it. Unfortunately tis not I! Firstly I tried Ronseal then the more expensive Sadolin. The picture shows my decking 1 year on since I painted it with Sadolin. JUST1YEAR!  over £30 a tin and this is how it looks. The areas that don't get traffic are fine. It doesn't get heavy traffic just me and my wife and she is a petite Chinese lady who is partially disabled. The stain doesn't appear to have soaked into the wood but sits on the surface and flakes off when walked upon. Has anybody found a possible solution to this problem? Thanks.

Some stains don't take kindly to a different one being put on top, if one is oil based,  maybe that's the reason. You could try pressure washing you deck  to get off the top layer.
I have used Screwfix own brand, two coats or 3 on new boards but it does need doing every year and never had trouble with peeling.

Yea I did think of just removing it all with a pressure wash but the basic deck colour is pretty dire. Can I ask why, if you've never had trouble with peeling, that you do it every year?

We have moved now but our decking was in full sun. It didn't take long to do and as we had spent a fair bit of money it seemed sensible to protect it well.

Thanks K. That looks very smart. I pressure washed it all this morning (what a mess!) and I'm going to stain what wood is left with screwfix stain. At least at £9-99 a tin I won't find it so painful if I have to do it every year.

Make sure your timber is very dry so it soaks in. The stuff I used is called

NO NONSENSE TIMBER DECKING OIL CLEAR 5LTR (44785)

They do other wood colours as well

Ah! That's interesting. I've just put on the first coat of No Nonsense Decking STAIN, not OIL. Maybe that's what I should have used. I wonder if I can put the oil on top of the stain.

If changing from one type of product to another you may need to get a proper deck stripper solution to apply first. Make sure the deck is really dry before applying stain as that's when you are likely to get flaking due to moisture ingress
No longer newish but can't think of a new name so will remain forever newish.  B)
