Is my tree dying?

I have a small flat-topped tree in my front garden (sorry, not sure what it is ) which normally has beautiful pink blossom on it each spring. In 2017 it was covered in blossom, however this year there is virtually none, and only one side of the tree has any leaves or flowers. The ‘dead’ side is covered in greeny orange lichen. This has been growing on it for a few years but has got worse this year. The tree is probably at least 20 years old, possibly nearer to 30. Is it dead or dying (if so could this be due to last years’ hot summer), or can I save it?

One of the many wonderful lichen species ; probably Xanthorea parietina .
Completely harmless to your tree and a symbol of good air-quality .

Your tree is very fortunate to be the bearer of such an interesting life-form .

  • Thanks Paul, it’s good to know our air quality is fine. It’s just a shame the tree’s not looking so good these days. Maybe it’s just getting old.

I think your tree is getting on a bit and slowly dying. I have been watching a tree opposite me dying slowly year after year. More and more branches failing to leaf up, the leaves less abundant. Lichen growth are also signs of slowing down of growth.
