Is this ground elder?

Hello,

I have had this growing in my compost area. Is it ground elder? I was told by our experienced gardeners that it isn't, but I want to be certain.

What could it be?

Have you put potato peelings in your compost bin?

It’s Enchanter’s Nightshade, Circaea lutetiana.  Not related to poisonous nightshades. It’s a pretty wild woodland plant.

So they are not tiny potatoes growing up the stalk? Must grow from bulbs then?

    It spreads by underground stolons.

  • thank you all.

I do have potatoes growing in my compost bin as well. I shamefully have to throw too many of them away.

It was the white roots that worried me. But it appears to be not overly invasive.
