Any herbicide with glyphosate in it will kill any plant it comes into contact with but there is a gel form that can be 'painted' onto leaves of the target plant without affecting other wanted plants in the garden.
Get spraying @bryman6000 . You will use a whole bottle in no time, but it is good stuff. Wait a week and you will see which plants are going yellow, that will tell you where to spray next. Unfortunately it will take time but if you have a good go this year next you may be able to start on the lawn. Dont worry about spraying as when its dry it stays with the plant, as long as your little one doesn't eat them it's ok.
Yes fire that’s definitely what I’ve done. There was a lot of this in the garden anyway (far too much to dig up) and loads of random plants in the borders too so I’ve had a hell of a time trying to get to as many roots as possible so I’m the end strummed loads back and used a rotivator.....I didn’t bother getting every last root up though as I thought it would just die off. Now I know different!!!!
purplerallim you really think I’m not going to be able to seed until next year!?!? 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Had grand plans for the garden this summer!
So sorry to upset you @bryman6000, but with a garden that has run wild for a while it takes time to recover. As you rotivated you will have lots of new growth so any grass will end up sprayed as well.🙁 Maybe take a section clear then put membrane down with wood chips for a play area while clearing the next, then when it's big enough seed it all( or better turf) perhaps in October then the grass will have time to root before needing to green up in spring.
as you can see from my pic, when we moved in it was seriously overgrown. All of these borders had all kinds of stuff in them and I’ve spent weeks and weeks cutting it down and digging out roots! I honestly thought the hard work was done haha! This stuff is literally now everywhere....where all the borders were and under the hedges! I tried to salvage as many of the nice plants as I could and have moved loads around etc that were already here....so now the borders are a lot small with a few choice plants in them.....but over the weekend they’ve been swamped by the elder!
anyway I’ve sprayed the lot this evening with some stuff the garden centre recommended. Unfortunately I think I’ve got quite a lot of my plants too as there was so much elder!
oh well....anything worth doing is worth doing properly eh!? At least we have a patio to sit at this summer!
"slowly , slowly, catchy monkey" as they say. Gardening is a marathon, not a sprint. Don't get overly stressed at the perceived lack of progress. You'll get there.

i also read the leaves were edible too so I had a little munch last night....quite nice actually. I may harvest some before I spray them!
cheers all
