Ivy and surrounding plants dying back with black tips on new growth

  • Great thanks for the extra info

I've now given everything plenty of water and will continue with a lighter watering for the next few weeks. The compost is a very good idea, I will get some this weekend. I assume I just blend it in with existing beds and turn over and get a mix. I don't really want to go too far down at the moment as some of the flowers in area's are starting to come through.

Sorry if I sound like an absolute amateur but in all honesty that's what I am. I've gone from a flat to a house with a very nice mature garden and I'm trying my best to keep it looking it's best. In general it's going well but the Ivy and Fatsia seem to be bucking the trend lol

    Thanks again

No need to try and turn the soil. I imagine the soil will be tangled with roots and very dense. Just pour in a new layer and fork it in just to make it even. We all had to start somewhere, and if you have inherited a mature or established garden, it can motivate you to learn more and try and carry on what was originally there.

I'm sure in time the Ivy will recover and the Fatsia will rejuvenate once you have pruned back all the stray branches.
  • Great thanks again, I've got some compost so I'll spread a layer around and water and hope for the best  :)

Thanks again for the reply and replies it's much appreciated.

Just thought I'd provide an update in case anyone else in future has a similar issue.

I put a cm or so of compost down at the base of the Ivy, and then watered heavily for a few days and also added some plant feed. Nothing much seemed to improve for a couple of weeks but then in the space of a week it suddenly recovered and is now covered in lovely fresh large green leaves. Life finds a way I guess

    Thanks for all the responses.

Oh forgot to mention the Fatsia, that has stopped dropping leaves but still doesn't look great but much better than it did. I had to trim a couple of the large branches which was a shame. A few healthy looking leaves have started to grow near the base of the plant and at the end of some of the large remaining branches are a few small (1 cm) leaves which are slowly growing. So it's not out of the woods yet but at least I seem to have stopped some of the rot.

Glad to hear things have improved and the plants are growing back again. Ivy are tough plants. Sometimes,  they play dead, and when conditions improve, they will start growing again...
