Iberis 'Absolutely Amethyst' - gone all woody and straggly

I bought this Iberis 'Absolutely Amethyst' in 2016. Since last summer it's been very woody and straggly. Advice seems to be to just trim it after the petals fall off to tidy it up but I'm wondering if I should have pruned it back harder. Maybe it didn't like the dry of last summer?
