Apple Canker?
Hello,
Just wondering if anyone can help.
Some friends of mine have an old apple tree in their garden, and they are a bit concerned about it.
So, looking at the bark, and at the state of the tree, to me, it looks a bit like Canker, however, I'm no tree expert, so just wondering if anyone else has any ideas.
Thanks

If your friends want fruit I’d suggest they plant a couple of cordon or espalier trees ... they could even replace that rickety fence with a row of espalier ... I’ve made a fence alongside our terrace with an espaliered pear ... and then they can enjoy the appearance of the old tree and it’s undoubted contribution to the wildlife. The lichens on it are gorgeous and doing absolutely no harm at all.
It has a bit of a lean ... if they know a helpful blacksmith (or even a carpenter) he or she may be able to construct a sturdy prop to support it a bit ... I’ve seen that sort of thing be very effective in prolonging the life of beautiful old fruit trees.
I really wouldn’t worry about a bit of canker.
Its a beautiful old tree and I’m very envious.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Many thanks for your help.
I'll let them know not to worry about it.
Thank you.
