training a white wisteria

we are in the process of having a south facing single storey extension built right next to a pergola which has an established white wisteria growing on it. The extension has been designed with the hope that the wisteria can be trained across the front. We have had the proper foundation to enable it to be disturbed as little as possible, and I have pruned it very judiciously. Today I now realise the flat roof overhangs a lot, and shades it quite a lot. I am worried now that my dream will not be possible. Will it be ok does anyone have any ideas please?

I shouldn't think that will be a huge problem Josie. Does the trunk of the wisteria get the sun?  If you do find it doesn't flower so well next year, is there scope to train onto a substantial trellis on free standing posts at the front of the extension?

  • Thank you Lizzie. I felt better when I saw it in the daylight. The Listeria trunk is on an original post and arbour directly next to the left of the extension. We left the arbour to keep the wisteria. You have made me feel a bit more optimistic as the trunk and half of it is in the sun.

It will grow and it will head for the sun.  Just direct it where you want it as much as you can.

Our lilac one is just coming into bloom and like yours smells gorgeous today.

  • They are beautiful plants. The white one is much later and no leaves or buds are out yet. We only moved in just over a year ago and I didn't know what colour it would. Must admit I do prefer the lilac one but I am thrilled to have one of any colour! Found this one photo from last year
