  Does he have a long pointy nose? Could be a vine weevil.

  Thank you @BobTheGardener & @Busy-Lizzie, I was hoping not a vine weevil as I cannot bring myself to kill bugs! - im going to hope its the snail beetle and let it get on with its life :-)
