Raised bed

I have what is prob going to be a bog standard query, but i have chickens and one mountain of straw/hay mixed with manure and was wondering if i could use this(fairly fresh) to start a raised bed with topsoil on top! The bed in question is going to be used for runner beans and borlotti beans.

My only thought is that the fresh manure would start heating up and cook the roots of your beans, even with a good layer of topsoil on top. I don’t grow those types of beans though, and I know some dig runner bean trenches and line the bottom with veg peelings, shredded newspaper etc., so really just bumping your thread in the hope someone can advise you, Richard...

  • Thank you Nollie its a tricky one as ive only had chickens a few months and i know putting he manure on compost heap speeds composting proccess up but no idea about using it straight off.

I’d certainly give it a go, but with at least 3” of top soil.  Or maybe even just use bags/containers placed on the ‘hot bed’
