Broad beans

I sowed the sutton last autumn which i have done before successfully. Howver, they are looking distinctly battered and sad. Can't decide whether to keep going with them or give up and start again.

I’d support them with tomato canes ... they’ll perk up when the weather warms up a bit. You’ll get a crop so much earlier than if you start again ... although you could always sow some more anyway ... you can never have too many broad beans

Keep them and sow more. They look better than my autumn sown beans which went to the compost heap the sky. Mine sown in Feb, only look slightly better:)

Aquadulce Claudia sown
in situ at the end Oct/beg Nov ish.
They’ve overwintered well and are full of blossom. Looking forward to gammon, broad beans and parsley sauce. 😋

Definitely not as battered as mine!! However, i will keep on and fill the gaps with more seeds

I sow mine in two staggered double rows so theyre relatively close to each other and give each other a bit of shelter and support.
As these get a bit taller Ill put a ‘fence’ of tomato canes and strings around them for a bit of support as they’ll have the weight of the bean pods to carry.

My feb sown plants have perked up considerably since being under fleece for the last couple of weeks, it’s kept the cold wind off them and they are much happier! I’ve taken it off today expecting warmer weather, only to find vine weevil damage on some leaves.... can’t win! 😫
